Requests for page importation

This is a place to request that pages be imported with history of pages from other Wikimedia Foundation wikis to here. This might be done if a page was copied and pasted from a WMF wiki to here, or, in the case of the Nostalgia Wikipedia, to make very old revisions accessible. Administrators can import pages from Meta, the Outreach Wiki, the Test2 Wikipedia site, and the German, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish, and Nostalgia Wikipedias to the English Wikipedia (see Phabricator task 22280 for relevant shell permission requests, and to request permissions for importing from more projects). It is also possible to indirectly perform a transwiki import from other projects by using step-wise process through a third project that has a project mapping already created, although using the export/import process may be simpler.

Guidelines for admins

Check the history of the source page before importing. If there are overlapping edits between the source and destination page, import the edits into the MediaWiki talk namespace, since it is very rarely used. Follow this procedure, where "foo" is the title of the page in the English Wikipedia and "bar" is the title of the source page:

  1. Import "bar". When asked for the namespace, select "MediaWiki talk".
  2. Move "foo" to "MediaWiki talk:bar". When asked whether you want to delete the page, answer yes.
  3. From the "move succeeded" window, there is a link to the page history at "MediaWiki talk:bar". Activate it, perhaps in another tab or window, and there will be some text in the form "View or restore xxx deleted edits?". Activate the link associated with that text and undelete the imported edits that you need. The remaining edits will stay safely deleted in the MediaWiki talk namespace.
  4. Revert the move you made in step two. Uncheck the box that says "Leave a redirect behind", since redirects from the MediaWiki talk namespace are useless. If you want, you can use the "revert" link in the "move succeeded" window. The page move should go without a hitch.

The same procedure can be used when there are no overlapping edits, but in this case, it's best to move the page first, so the import appears in the page history.

In general, do not use the "assign edits to local users where the named user exists locally", leaving this off will indicate in the history the project the edits came from and you won't have to worry about non-created accounts here.

See User:Graham87/Import for guidelines on importing from the Nostalgia Wikipedia. There is a log of all page imports at Special:Log/import.

Import of [1] to User:DannyS712/Tag.js[edit]

  • Language: labs:MediaWiki:Gadget-tag.js
  • New name: User:DannyS712/Tag.js
  • Note: Importing from the beta cluster to a personal JS page, so probably can only be actioned by Xaosflux. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 21:49, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
  • Note by importing administrator: On hold @DannyS712: we don't have a mapping to betalabs, and even for XML upload imports, we need that. So there are a few options: (1) you could request a iw map add at meta:Talk:Interwiki map, or you could just create the file yourself. As you are the only editor of that page, there are no attribution issues that have to be maintained. Let me know how you would like to proceed. — xaosflux Talk 21:58, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: I would like to preserve the history, so I am going to ask over on meta. Sorry, I thought you didn't need an iw map for XML uploads if you assign the edits to local users (in this case to me). --DannyS712 (talk) 22:00, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
@DannyS712: We get to 'assign local' or assign foreign, but we still have to assign the import Interwiki prefix: - I could just say it is enwiki, although it isn't. — xaosflux Talk 22:47, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: okay, lets do that? If it turns out that the beta cluster is added to the interwiki map, then I can always trouble someone to delete and reimport it if I care (but I don't really). Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 22:49, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
@DannyS712: I'd rather not until that discussion is closed. For immediate work you can just create the page here, and then we can always import the history later. This request will stay open. — xaosflux Talk 22:52, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: Okay, thanks --DannyS712 (talk) 22:53, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
@DannyS712: FWIW if they close that as "no" I'll still import for you as if it were here. — xaosflux Talk 23:04, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
@DannyS712 and Xaosflux: FWIW I do imports from non-interwiki-mapped wikis to here all the time (with my old database dump work). I just put the three-letter abbreviation of the month and then the year of the database dump in the prefix field and check the box about assigning edits to local users, but I do make sure they get to the correct usernames. If I were doing the import, I'd just put betawiki in the prefix field. Graham87 01:09, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
@Graham87: thanks for the note, since the interwiki discussion is open already, I'd like to see the result (especially as this is far from urgent). — xaosflux Talk 03:32, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
 Done @DannyS712: I've completed your upload, looks like the IW discussion at meta is going to be protracted. — xaosflux Talk 03:12, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: thanks so much (and on a side note, was I correct that you are the only user that can import to a personal js page?) thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 03:20, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
@DannyS712: no, Graham87 can as well - there are a few processes that override interface admin edit restrictions, and xmlupload is one of them (more visibly: globalrename is as well - for moves of such pages). Had it not been for the xml export/import part (i.e. if this was sourced from a project on the transwiki source list) any admin could have transwiki-imported it to Wikipedia: space, then you could have moved it to your own user space and they could have deleted the redirect. — xaosflux Talk 03:32, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: oh, thanks for explaining. --DannyS712 (talk) 03:33, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
